3 Tips for Protecting Presents from Pets & Vice Versa

One of the biggest temptations during the holiday season for people and pets alike is presents. It’s hard enough to keep small and big kids alike from diving into the gifts, and even harder when you have four-legged gifts. I can’t tell you how often I have had to rescue gifts from our pups!

Here are some of the things that have helped us.

Use a Baby Gate

One of the things you can do is to keep the gifts behind a baby gate. This can also help with protecting your tree.  It will be harder for the pets to get to the gifts and, if they can’t see them they won’t be tempted to get into them.

Wait to Put the Gifts Out

The second thing that you can do is to wait until the last minute to put the gifts under the tree. This also will work for the two legged present snatchers, too. If you don’t put them where they can be seen, you won’t have to worry about anyone jumping in to open them before Christmas morning.

Don't Put Food Gifts Out

Finally, there are few things more tempting than food gifts to our pets. So, if you are giving someone a gift that has any kind of food in it, don’t put it out. Keep it up and away from tempting your pet, especially if it’s chocolate. It’s best to hand it to your gift recipient directly.

These are three tips that we have found work best for our dogs when it comes to any kind of gifts. The last thing you want is to have to go to an emergency vet on Christmas because your pet has gotten into something they should not have. You also don’t want a crying, disappointed child because Fido got into their new stuffed animal and tore it to bits.
