4 Tips for Keeping Pets Safe in Winter Months

We have two very spoiled dogs, and they love going out in the snow. We have had a ton of snow lately and it’s so hard to get them in or keep them in. Below are some tips that we use to keep our dogs safe during the winter.

Keep Them Inside When Possible

If you’re staying inside because it’s too cold, chances are your pets are going feel the same way. You shouldn’t keep them outside for extended periods during really cold weather (yes even if they give you puppy dog eyes). Dogs with short coats might need a sweater or coat during walks. Of course, this doesn’t apply to the dog breeds who are used to the cold, like Huskies and Malamutes.

Provide Them with Outdoor Shelter

If your dogs are outdoors, make sure they have a doghouse that is draft-free, and dry that:

  • Is big enough so that they can lie down and sit in but also will retain their body heat
  • Includes an elevated floor that’s covered using straw or cedar shavings
  • Includes an entrance facing away from strong winds and covered with heavy plastic or waterproof fabric

Care for Their Feet

Chemicals such as salt that you use for melting snow and ice can damage their feet. Rib their paws gently using a dampened towel to remove the irritants once you come in from a walk. You also can buy your dog some dog boots to protect their paws. It’s also important to watch for any signs that their feet are very cold, which might include them whining, stopping, or lifting their paws frequently.

Provide Extra Water & Food

When you have a pet who spends some time outside during the winter will use lots of energy to keep warm. Provide them with some additional food and check their water regularly to make sure it’s fresh without being frozen. Use plastic water and food bowls rather than metal. This will prevent them from freezing to the bowls.

These are four tips that you can use to help your pets stay comfortable and enjoy the winter. Let them enjoy the snow but keep an eye out for any problems or discomfort that your pet might be having.
