Signs Your Dog is Overheated

Recently, we posted a blog about how to keep your dog safe during the summer heat. Today, we are going to talk about some signs that your dog is overheated.

Early Signs:

Here are some signs that your dog is starting to get overheated.

·

  • Excessive panting:  It’s normal for a dog to pant to help them cool down. But if they’re panting rapidly or heavily, it means they’re really overheated.
  • Drooling: Excessively drooling can often mean that your dog’s trying to keep themselves cool through evaporating their saliva.
  • Rapid heart Rate – When a dog’s heart rate is up, it can often mean that their body’s working harder to keep their temperature regulated.
  • Gums & Tongue are Bright red – This can mean that your dog’s temperature is rising.
  • Weakness or Lethargy – Your dog is very tired or doesn’t want to move.

Serious Signs:

·         If you notice your dog is doing any of the things below, it means that they might be in trouble.

  • Diarrhea or Vomiting – This is a common sign that your dog is severely overheated and dehydrated.
  • Disorientation/Stumbling – Your dog might be having trouble walking. They also might seem confused.
  • Collapse – If your dog faints or collapses, this is a major medical emergency
  • Elevated Body Temperature – If your dog’s temperature goes above 103, it’s concerning.
  • Seizures – When your dog is severely overheated, it can cause seizures.

DisWhat You Should Do:

  • Take them someplace cooler
  • Give them lots of nice, fresh water.
  • Put cool water on their ears and paws. Think about using a towel dampened with cool water or a vest that’s for dog cooling.
  • When your dog has severe symptoms or their temperature is high, get them to a vet immediately.

These are signs that your dog is overheated and that they need to be cooled down. Protect your dog and keep an eye on them when the weather is hot. You don’t want a fun summer day to turn into a tragedy because your furry friend is sick.
